Angela’s story

Angela reflects on finding safety, moving into her own apartment, and the support that continued after shelter.

Angela: So I came in January, basically broken and scared. And I’ll get emotional, but it quickly came to me that this was a safe space, you know? And the two ladies that ran it made me feel comfortable. Their resources and care and concern—I mean, you already know how I talk. It was just amazing to me, you know? And again, the resources and opportunities that they provide were just untouchable.

It breaks my heart for the women and families that now don’t have any place to call and say, “Hey, I need someplace to go,” you know? And just because this is the place that gave me my new beginning, it kind of, you know, it’s sad.

Because I was scared to death to go into my apartment. I’m like, “No, I didn’t want to leave here,” you know? I was here twice, because I thought I’d found a place to go. It didn’t work out, and they took me back right away.

I don’t worry about my bills. I have plenty of food in my cupboards, you know? And I still have you guys to lean on if I have any questions, or just, you know, need someone to talk to. So beyond being here, once you transition out, you can still call and say, “Hey, I need someone to talk to. I need some advice.” And you guys would definitely, you know, be there for whoever needs it.

Interviewer: Anything for others who are struggling with homelessness?

Angela: Yes. So I’ve been told that they will soon have another shelter for women and families. And call Peak of Hope or Sarah, yeah, because the opportunities are there. Don’t let it pass you by.
